Well, I got the same with dutch: I guess I can read most of the phrases, but when they talk, to me, it sounds nothing like the phrases written down. They seem to have a constant cough flue in the throat... 

The mother of one of my friend during school is dutch and so I caught myself right in the middle of these coughing interactions again and again...

And then to understand that German and Dutch not far from each other in the old language stands.
For example, near Aachen you can speak Dutch and the people totally understand every word you say.

When I first came to Wiesbaden (mid-Germany), I didn't understand anybody! The tongue in Northern Germany is pretty different...
